What a tiring day. I’m 50 years old and have never seen US Congressional representatives behave this way. And this is certainly the first time I have ever seen a mass of US citizens behave the way they have today. To my recollection, there has never been a more callow group of men and women elected to office than the majority of the Republicans currently in Congress. They have failed their oaths to the Constitution and profited from the misinformation they created and spread.
After nearly of decade of slow spoon-feeding, the populace these electeds represent has committed an act of insurrection. They pushed their way into the Capitol building, vandalized the House of Representatives and the Senate Chambers. One great mind walked out of the building with a podium and a smile for the cameras!
Why were they there in the first place? President Donald Trump encouraged them to be there. Thanked them for their loyalty. This is the day that he dreads. Today is the last day that his presidency has any validity. Today, the Senate accepts the votes of the Electoral College and declares Joe Biden the next President of the United States of America. These Proud Boys, MAGA hats, and general malcontents were let passed1 the barricades surrounding the Capitol building. They pat themselves on the back and call each other patriots.
What’s gnawing at my mind is who made the decision to be so accommodating to these people? Just six months earlier, there were at least fifty to a hundred DC officers in riot gear on those same steps. Why? Because the Black Lives Matter protest parade was marching by. There was concern of wide spread looting, vandalism, and violence. And nothing of the such materialized on the scale the police prepared for. Yet today, a day after the DC police clashed with Proud Boys, they walked some of the very same people to the front door.
It’s still 2020. We didn’t get our new year. If this behavior isn’t investigated and punished, we may never get our new year.
